Boyd Coatings Applies Coatings to Small, Complex IDs
Boyd Coatings is among few coatings applicators that are able to successfully coat small inside diameters (IDs), especially those with obstacles. While large IDs are not an issue for most professional coaters, small IDs coupled with complexities such as bends, flanges, corners or other obstacles greatly increase the level of difficulty.
Hudson, MA…. Boyd Coatings Research Co., Inc. is successfully meeting a demand for coating the interior of small, complex- shaped components. “We are happy to report that Boyd can evenly coat an Inside Diameter (ID) as small as 0.007” – even if the lumen is long or has bends, flanges, corners or other obstacles,” reveals John Kovacs, General Manager at Boyd Coatings. “Over the years, many advanced companies and universities have requested unique applications beyond ‘normal’ boundaries. This has developed our abilities to think creatively and rise to unusual challenges. As a result, our proficiencies exceed the standard abilities of many other coatings applicators.”
In addition to coating small IDs, Boyd’s quality assurance requires those IDs to be inspected as well. Boyd Coatings’ borescopes and other specialized inspection devices enable Quality Assurance Technicians to examine small inside diameters to depths of 39”. Precision go/no go wire and pin gauges are used to assure customers’ tight circularity and thickness tolerances are achieved.
Since 1965, Boyd Coatings Research has been applying technology to its processes and has decades of experience in dealing with world class organizations, fortune 500 companies and universities. The result is a reputation as a leader in the coating industry.
Boyd Coatings Research Co., Inc. applies a wide variety of high performance coatings, specializing in the medical, industrial and aerospace markets. The company is an ISO 9001:2008 registered and a licensed applicator for Teflon® and Whitford products, and extensive experience with hundreds of other popular coatings and finishes providing non-stick, heat resistant, conductive, insulative, hydrophobic and other desirable properties. High-volume and flexible manufacturing capabilities allow the company to process both large and small quantities quickly and cost-effectively.
Boyd Coatings has been selected to receive a sizable Workforce Training Fund Grant made available through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The grant is expected to support new jobs, increased work capacity, productivity and advanced workforce skills. The company has already responded with its first training program: “Lean Manufacturing as a Team.” Future workforce training will focus on advanced topics in Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, Customer Service, Leadership and Supervision.
Hudson, MA…. Boyd Coatings Research Co., Inc. has been awarded a Workforce Training Fund Grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. According to Joanne F. Goldstein, Massachusetts Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development, the grant’s purpose is to provide resources to run training programs that ensure business viability and growth as well as a workforce that is “top notch.” The grant program is administered by the Commonwealth Corporation.
In immediate response to the grant, Boyd Coatings has already begun its first training: “Lean Manufacturing as a Team.” Future workforce training to be conducted over the next two years will include advanced topics in Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, Customer Service, Leadership and Supervision Excellence. “Boyd Coatings Research is committed to its employees and to providing resources which improve our productivity,” remarked Donald Garcia, President of Boyd Coatings. “This, in turn, enhances our company’s abilities to improve on deliveries for our customers. In the end, everybody wins.”
With regard to the importance of the Workforce Training Grants , Massachusetts Governor, Deval Patrick has commented, "We are focused on addressing the skills gap issue in the Commonwealth so that workers can compete in today’s ever-changing jobs market. The Workforce Training Fund focuses on the needs of both our businesses and workers, as Massachusetts continues to lead the nation in economic recovery.”

Boyd Coatings Research Begins “Zero PFOA Phase-in”
Hudson, MA…. Boyd Coatings Research Co., Inc. has announced that it has begun transitioning to Zero PFOA (perfluorooctanic acid) for customers impacted with the EPA mandate to phase out PFOA by the year 2015. Boyd Coatings has committed to fully complete its transition from Low PFOA to Zero PFOA no earlier than Spring, 2013, thus allowing time for medical customers to complete necessary qualifications. To further assist its medical customers, Boyd Coatings is providing Zero PFOA material test results to aid in the necessary qualifications. “We want to ensure that our medical clients’ products are not impacted by this change as they complete their qualifications,” explains Don Garcia, Director, Research & Development at Boyd Coatings. “We are working closely with each of our medical customers to ensure that we have sufficient Low PFOA material on hand to maintain their production lines as they transition to Zero PFOA .”

Hydrophobic Coating Also Effectively Protects against Corrosion and Chemical Agents
Hudson, MA…. Boyd Coatings Research Co., Inc. has developed the CRC 6000-line Hydrophobic Coating, a customized coating used primarily on radomes, satellite dishes and other communication installations to prevent water film from building up and hindering signals. CRC 6000 is currently employed on ground installations in every climate from the earth’s deserts to the arctic; it is also used on seagoing vessels as well as rotary and fixed wing aircraft. CRC 6000 is a solid dispersion of fluorocarbon polymer and an aliphatic, moisture-cure, two-part polyurethane that creates a hard film with superior UV-resistance and long-term water repellency. CRC 6000 was designed to create a high contact angle (140+ degrees) for water droplets, allowing water to roll off and leave a perfectly dry surface. CRC 6000 thus minimizes signal attenuation, especially at 44 GHz and 21GHz, which traditionally results from surface water accumulation.
In addition to maintaining clear communications signals, CRC 6000 provides excellent resistance to corrosion, abrasion, chemicals and impact, and is self-cleaning in most environments. CRC 6000 can be applied directly to most composite substrates (including DuPont Tedlar and reinforced epoxies) and, with appropriate primers, to virtually any surface. Additionally, CRC 6000 has CARC (Chemical Agent Resistant Coating) properties which make it ideal for military applications.
CRC 6000 can be applied by conventional air, airless or air-assisted airless spray methods. The coating can also be brushed or rolled onto small areas. This allows for field application and repair as well as application in OEM production plants. CRC 6000 has a flat finish and is available in standard white, light gray, custom-color matches and Federal Standard 595 colors.
President of Boyd Coatings Educates Engineers in Webinar
Don Garcia, President of Boyd Coatings Research Co., Inc., recently presented a 30-minute, online educational seminar directed towards general industrial, medical, and aerospace industries. The webinar, aptly named, “A Product Engineer’s Guide to Specifying the Right Coating,” covered pros and cons of commonly used technical coatings as well as hybrid and customized coatings.
As an ISO 9001:2008 certified company, and licensed applicator for DuPont Teflon®, Whitford, 3M, and CRC series coatings, Boyd offers hundreds of coatings and finishes providing non-stick, heat resistant, conductive, insulative, hydrophobic or other properties necessary to meet your product requirements. Often the answer involves a combination of coatings – or specially developed coatings, which utilizes specific desirable characteristics to address unique product applications.
